In 1995 she was appointed associate judge of the 10th Judicial Circuit and in 2001 she was appointed to circuit judge, becoming the first woman circuit judge in the 10th Judicial Circuit. While serving on the bench Judge Maher was actively involved in developing the Guardian Ad Litem program in Tazewell County and also creating a Visitation Center for the safe exchange of children for visitation purposes.
