Message from the President

I hope everyone enjoyed the annual meeting. A little business, a little fun, lots of good food and drink – all of which you can enjoy again with some golf. The annual Golf Outing is Monday, August 29, at WeaverRidge. Another fun night is Friday, August 26, at the Chiefs game with our very own Brothers-In-Law singing the national anthem. Purchase your tickets (only $10) at the PCBA office.
Fall is approaching and the committees are busy planning for the year. If you have not signed up for a committee, please consider doing so. The Committees are the backbone of the association and provide an excellent opportunity to exercise your leadership and creative skills.
Speaking of exercise, do not forget the Strides for Justice 5k run/1 mi. walk on September 24. Also in September is the Annual Diversity Luncheon on Thursday, September 29. Please join us in welcoming the President of the Illinois State Bar Association, Vincent Cornelius, as our speaker.  Reservations may be made online or by using the enclosed registration form.
Above:  Dennis Orsey, Judge McCuskey, President Maher, Richard Zuckerman and John Nicoara.
Special thanks to Jay Janssen for sponsoring the event and to John Schulz for providing the DeLorean for all the photo ops.

Welcome to the 2016 participants in the ABA’s Judicial Intern Opportunity Program (JIOP), Angela White, with Judge Maher, and Erick Orantes.  The interns assist the 10th Circuit Judges in the Peoria County Courthouse for approximately six weeks during June, July and August.  This ABA program is supported by the Peoria County Bar Association Foundation.  To contribute to this program, among others, visit https://peoriabar.org/product/pcba-foundation.

In 2015, YWCA Pekin’s Board of Directors created an award category for Women’s Recognition Day, the Impact Award. The 2016 Impact Award was presented to Hon. Jerelyn Maher. After graduating from Bradley University and Loyola School of Law, she became one of the first women to concentrate in trial work in this area. In 1995 she was appointed associate judge of the 10th Judicial Circuit and in 2001 she was appointed to circuit judge, becoming the first woman circuit judge in the 10th Judicial Circuit. While serving on the bench Judge Maher was actively involved in developing the Guardian Ad Litem program in Tazewell County and also creating a Visitation Center for the safe exchange of children for visitation purposes. We are fortunate to enjoy her leadership this year as our PCBA President. Photographer:  Barb Williams
