Message from the President
Although we have not seen much sun in Peoria the last few weeks, things continue to be bright at the PCBA. The Winter Series of our CLE seminars will conclude with the Family Law program on February 4.  We look forward to the Brown Bag series every Wednesday in March and the popular Tried and True: Part IV on May 19. The Lincoln Memorial Banquet is around the corner on February 16 and is always a bright spot in our year. Be sure to mark your calendars for May 4 as our Law Day program moves to the evening so hopefully more students and their parents can attend.  Chief Justice Lloyd Karmeier will be our keynote speaker. This will be a family event and PCBA membe

rs should take advantage of the opportunity to purchase seats for their own children.  Tickets are $40 for adults and $20 for kids under 18.

Lincoln Memorial Banquet

From Craig Young, Banquet Chair:  There’s still time left to register for the 109th Annual Lincoln Memorial Banquet. This year’s speakers are

Bradley University President, Gary Roberts, and the award winning and nationally renowned Bradley Speech Team. Tickets are $100, or $720 for a table of 8. To encourage attendance we have a discounted rate of $50 for first time attendees.  To reserve seats online visit www.peoriabar.org/product/109th-lincoln-memorial-banquet. We hope to see you there!

Fitness Health & Wellness
By: Kyle Tompkins, Chair
Beating the Winter Blues
Oh, the weather outside is frightful…but exercising is so delightful! During the dull and dreary days of winter, it can be hard to maintain a regular workout routine. However, health experts highly recommend incorporating exercise into your everyday life. According to the American Osteopathic Association, regular workouts, even during winter, reduce the risk for certain diseases such as heart disease and high blood pressure, in addition to improving mood and increasing energy levels. Visit www.osteopathic/org/osteopathic-health/about-your-health/health-conditions-library/general-health/Pages/winter-workout.aspx.

Memorials
On Saturday, January 28, 2017, a member of the Association, Charles L. Danner, passed away.  He was 58 years old.  Mr. Danner was born in Peoria, graduated from Manual High School, and enlisted in the Air Force.  He earned his B.A. in management from Park College in Parkville, Missouri, in 1993 and his J.D. from Southern Illinois University College of Law in 1996.  He joined the PCBA in 1999 and was a sole practitioner in Peoria.
Contributions in memory of Mr. Danner may be made to the PCBA Foundation online at
ww.peoriabar.org/product/pcba-foundation.  The PCBA has made a contribution of $100 to the Foundation in memory of Mr. Danner.
Public Relations
People’s Law School
The PCBA has partnered with Illinois Central College again this year for People’s Law School. This year’s programs will include:

The classes are from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. at the ICC North Campus and are free to the public, but advance registration is required. Thank you to all the attorneys for donating their time to speak in this year’s programs.
Job Shadowing
By:  Katherine Swise, Public Relations Chair
In order to foster a positive relationship between the Peoria County Bar Association and the community, the Public Relations Committee is continuing the PCBA job shadowing program to provide local students with an opportunity to share in the day-to-day experience of local attorneys.  We are seeking members who are willing to host a student “shadow” on the morning of April 6, 2017.  The program is open to local high school seniors and Bradley students participating in Judge Maher’s legal studies program.   The job shadowing will take place during the morning, followed by a lunch program and possible afternoon courtroom observation for the students and their hosts at the Peoria County Courthouse.  If you would like to host a student during this time, please contact Linda at pcba@mtco.com
Young Lawyers
Save the date! The Young Lawyers committee will be holding their annual Law Day event on Thursday, May 4 at 6:00 p.m. at the Spalding Pastoral Center in Peoria. Logan Block from Hasselberg Grebe Snodgrass Urban & Wentworth was instrumental in securing this year’s featured speaker, the Honorable Lloyd A. Karmeier, Chief Justice of the Illinois Supreme Court.   Michael Toren mtoren@hgsuw.com also from the Hasselberg Grebe firm, is the one to contact if you are interested in speaking at area schools during the month of April as part of the Law Day celebration. Essay contest winners will be announced at the May 4 event, and Wade Blumenshine from Heyl Royster is in charge of this year’s Law Day Essay Contest.  We will also recognize our members who are celebrating 50 years since their admission to the bar:  Honorable John Gorman, Honorable Michael Mihm, Thomas Penn, James Tomlin and David Walvoord.  Reservation information is forthcoming.

Prairie State Legal Services
By: Katherine Whetstone
We would like to thank the following attorneys, paralegals, and other support staff who have assisted low income persons and successfully closed pro bono cases: Debbie Harper, Sam Harrod, Donald Hartshorn, Michael Kraft, Curtis Lane, Kevin Lowe, Valerie Moehle, Susan O’Neal, Carol Perkins, James Van Rheeden, Rich Williams, and William Wombacher.
Free Legal Advice Clinic
I still need a few volunteers for our upcoming Free Legal Advice Clinic being held on Saturday February 11, 2017 from 9-12.  This clinic is taking place at the Prairie State Legal Services office at 331 Fulton Street in downtown Peoria.  This clinic is designed to help clients who have already gone through the PSLS application process by giving them one time legal advice on civil legal matters.  Attorneys will not be asked to provide extended representation to anyone they advise during this clinic.  Volunteers will also be covered under Prairie State’s malpractice insurance.  You will only be matched with clients who have legal problems that you are comfortable advising on.  This is a great opportunity to get involved in Pro Bono if you only have limited time to give. If you are interested in getting involved in this event or have any questions please call me at (309)621-4005.
Brief Advice Cases for Pro Bono
I am looking to recruit volunteer attorneys to commit to giving brief, one time, phone advice to eligible Prairie State clients.  This would be a great way for new pro bono attorneys to get some experience with the types of cases Prairie State handles.  It is also a great way for existing volunteers to do just a little bit more pro bono work.  If you are interested in participating in this phone advice program and giving just 30-45 minutes of your time to eligible clients please let me know and I would be happy to give you more details.
