Message from the President
We are quickly ending summer, and gearing up for fall activities. Our first board meeting of this year was very well attended and we moved forward on many projects to enhance your membership in the PCBA. Also, the Board named the two members under 36 to the Nominating Committee. Congrats to Christina Cullom and Kerrianne Waters (at right). The golf outing was a great success, thanks to Jeff Bach and Brad Keller (with me at left), who chaired the event. We all raised a glass in memory of our long-time friend and avid golfer, Hon. Don Courson. I encourage you to attend the Diversity Luncheon on September 29; our speaker, Vincent Cornelius, is the first African American to be the President of the Illinois State Bar Association. The Columbus Day Professionalism Seminar is October 10 and will feature ethical considerations in jury selection and the Batson rule, and in preparing your witnesses for testimony. The holiday party is not far away and we need volunteers. I know there is a Saturday Night Live (or Jimmy Fallon or Samantha Bee) writer/actor in all of us, so please share that talent by contacting Linda.
Diversity The Diversity Committee invites you to celebrate and help promote diversity in our local professional community by attending the 13th Annual Diversity Luncheon on September 29th. We are delighted to have Vincent F. Cornelius, President of the Illinois State Bar Association, as our keynote speaker. You will have the opportunity to meet local high school students and regional law school students. Proceeds from the luncheon will be used to help fund the Diversity Scholarship presented annually to minority law school students with ties to the Peoria area. The recipients of this year’s scholarship will be announced. Reservation form included with this issue.
Lawyer Referral Service [LRS]This month we would like to thank attorney Susan O’Neal for her return of a referral fee in the amount of $552.30. Attorneys who participate in the LRS agree to send back to the PCBA 10% of attorneys’ fees over $1,000 on referred cases.
If you would like further information on the LRS, contact the PCBA office.
BROTHERS-IN-LAW On August 26 the PCBA's lawyer quartet performed their own rendition of the Star Bangled Banner at Dozer Park. At left are Paul Brodersen, John Bathke, Rob Bennett and Kevin Miller. Thank you for your time and effort put into this patriotic tribute. Over 50 PCBA members with family and friends attended the game to support the Brothers-in-Law and enjoy the Chiefs game. The Young Lawyers Committee members enjoyed a pre-game event at Thyme Kitchen & Craft Beer.

Entertainment 2016 Golf Outing - What a tremendous day our members and guests had on August 29 for a rain-free golf outing at WeaverRidge Golf Club. Although hot and muggy, the participants said they greatly enjoyed their day of relaxation and camaraderie. The highlight for many was the dinner and awards program, with the inimitable Jeff Bach (our own late-night comedian!) as the master of ceremonies. Congratulations to all of our winners. In particular, the winner of the Men’s Individual Low Gross (75) trophy was Craig Young. He and Jeff are shown here, at left. Winner of the raffle driver was Emily Perkins. Closest to Hole #4 contest winner was Brad Keller. Brad also wins the honor of chairing next year’s golf outing! Winners of mixed foursome (with a score of 74) were Dave Perkins, Emily Perkins, Sam Perkins and Tom Dluski. Raffle proceeds this year totaled $435, which will go to the Peoria office of Prairie State Legal Services. Mulligan sales totaled $210, and those proceeds will be sent to the ICC Foundation for the Lela Post Scholarship. Our thanks go to Kate (Durham) Whetstone from Prairie State for her help in selling raffle tickets. We would also like to thank our many sponsors of this event, listed on page 3.
2016 Holiday Party – The Skit Committee will meet at Richard’s on Main at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, September 8. Come with ideas, have a few drinks, and come up with even better ideas!
Fitness Health & Wellness By Logan Block, committee member If you have not signed up yet for the 2016 Strides for Justice 5k run or 1 mi. walk, or just have not started training, you may be worried that you won’t be ready to go the distance. Although a few weeks is not a lot of time to prepare for a 5K, it’s possible to still get yourself mentally and physically ready for the race. Here are some general tips to follow to help you prepare in a short amount of time: 1) Try a run/walk approach; 2) Run on the course; 3) Don’t try to make up for lost training time by running hard or long every day; and 4) Rest the day before so your legs are fresh for the race. For more information, check out this “Very Well” article on how to train for a 5K in two weeks: https://www.verywell.com/how-to-train-for-a-5k-in-two-weeks-2910856 REMINDER: Don’t forget to sign up for the 2016 Strides for Justice run/walk that will take place on Saturday, September 24, 2016, on Grandview Drive promptly at 8:00 a.m. Sign up as a firm with 10 registrants (attorneys, staff, family, friends) and receive a special discount. Please contact the PCBA for more information about group discounts. As always, 100% of the Strides for Justice proceeds will support our local Prairie State Legal Services office. This year, we are further promoting some friendly competition between firms with an award for the “fastest firm”! To register, go to http://www.stridesforjustice.com/.
