Thanksgiving recipes: Delicious and healthy options
Traditional Thanksgiving recipes often are "stuffed" with high fat and high carb calories that ruin an otherwise healthy nutrition plan! The Mayo Clinic offers several alternative recipes on their website for Thanksgiving dishes that are delicious and healthy! I particularly am intrigued by the Pumpkin Soup recipe! Happy Thanksgiving! And best wishes on making healthy food choices this holiday season!  http://www.mayoclinic.org/healthy-lifestyle/nutrition-and-healthy-eating/in-depth/thanksgiving-recipes/art-20048258

Lawyer Referral Service
This month we would like to thank attorney Lou Benassi for his return of a referral fee in the amount of $3,958.33. Attorneys who participate in the lawyer referral service agree to send back to the PCBA 10% of fees over $1,000.  The LRS is on the honor system - no tracking of referrals is kept - so we appreciate all the attorneys who make that commitment.

The PCBA gets calls every day from people needing attorneys in specific areas of law. If you are in need of new clients, please consider joining the lawyer referral service. You can join today by contacting Linda or Stephanie at the PCBA office.

NEW -- PCBA CLE Registration and Payment Policies

As approved by the Board of Directors on October 18, 2016, the PCBA implemented a new policy regarding CLE registration and payments. The details of the policy are outlined below.
Full payment must be received in advance of the program before you are considered registered. All registrations must be paid in full five business days prior to the program date or a late fee of $15 applies. For example, registrations for a January 7 program must be paid by January 2 in order to avoid the late fee.
You may register at the door if space is available; the $15 fee will apply. If you do not register at least five business days in advance of a program, PCBA cannot guarantee space or availability of food and/or beverage if provided at the seminar. No certificate of attendance will be issued until payment is received.
Refunds, less a $10 fee, will be issued only if the PCBA receives your cancellation, in writing by mail or email (pcbaasst@mtco.com or pcba@mtco.com), at least two business days prior to the program. If you registered and paid, but could not attend, you may request that materials be sent to you, free of charge. If video media is available, registrations may be converted to a self-study package for an additional $35.

By registering for a program, I grant permission to the Peoria County Bar Association to use photographs, motion pictures, recordings, or any other record of my participation in this event or related activities for their legitimate purpose without remuneration.  If you have any questions regarding this policy, please contact Linda or Stephanie at the PCBA office at 309-674-6049.
The 2017 Winter Series registration is now open. The seminars will be on Saturday mornings in January and February at the Spalding Pastoral Center, 419 NE Madison in Peoria. Check-in and continental breakfast begin at 8:00 a.m. with the seminar from 8:30-12:00. The 2017 lineup:

January 7: Civil Practice
January 14: Damages
January 21: Business and Real Estate
January 28: Estate Planning & Probate, with a Little Bit of Elder Law
February 4: Family Law (this seminar will end at 1:00 p.m. and provide 4 hours MCLE credit)
Register online at www.peoriabar.org/shop. or dowload the registration form to pay by check.

Membership
Membership Chair  Aliesha Graves reports that we have received an application for student membership from  Beverly Jones and John Mattheessen (student). The applications will be presented to the Board for approval in January.  The New Members’ Lunch (invitation only) will be Tuesday, November 8, at noon at the PCBA office.  The New Members’ Reception will be Thursday, November 17, at 5:00 at the new Kenny’s Westside Pub, 112 SW Jefferson (next to the Janssen Building).  Free food and beverages; all attorneys and judges welcome.

Nominating
On October 4 the Nominating Committee met for the purpose of selecting an attorney who will fill the role of Secretary-Treasurer next year, and annually thereafter move into the offices of Second Vice President, President-Elect and President of the PCBA.  The nominee should be someone from our association with past measurable involvement with the PCBA’s committees and activities, someone with demonstrated legal experience and abilities, and someone who exemplifies the character of the membership sufficient to lead the association in furtherance of all the association’s endeavors.  The Nominating Committee is pleased to report that it has selected Ambrose V. McCall (at left) as its nominee for the position of Secretary-Treasurer for the year 2017-18.  The committee chair has spoken with Ambrose who has agreed that if he is so nominated, he will accept the position.
2016-17 Nominating Committee:  Timothy J. Howard, Craig S. Young, James F. Kane, Hon. Lisa Y. Wilson, Kevin M. Miller, and two members under age 36 appoint by the Board of Directors:  Christina E. Cullom and Kerrianne L. Waters.

Pro Bono by Judge Michael Brandt, Chair
The PCBA Pro Bono Committee is looking for attorneys to handle expungement or sealing of records cases. The cases will be screened for financial and statutory eligibility before referral. The paperwork is available on line on the Illinois Supreme Court website and are easy to prepare. Normally one routine court hearing is all that is necessary. Contact Committee Chair Michael Brandt at jdgbrandt@sbcglobal.net or 309/369-1813.

Young Lawyers Committee
A big thank you to Wade Blumenshine and Sam Perkins for heading up the Halloween Blood Drive this year. A total of 25 pints of blood were collected which exceeded this year’s goal.   Young lawyer donors (below) were Aliesha Graves, Kerrianne Waters, Melissa Schoenbein among others, and Past President Mike Lied is a long-standing donor.  The scary witch is from the American Red Cross.

Project Santa
Though it is only the beginning of November, retail store decorations have made it clear that the Holliday season is upon us!  This means it is time for the PCBA to start thinking about Project Santa.  Project Santa is a Young Lawyers Committee sponsored event where members of the community partner with the South Side Mission to help children and families in need during the holiday season. This year, we hope to provide at least one gift for 150-200 children served by the South Side Mission, and to support the South Side Mission holiday season through additional monetary donations for winter clothes for the children, school supplies, electronics for use at the South Side Mission, for the purchase of gift cards as incentives for participation in academic contests, and for door prizes used to encourage parental participation at Family Read Night.
If you would like to donate a toy, or to make a monetary donation, but have not yet received a Sponsorship Form please contact James VanRheeden (jvanrheeden@quinnjohnston.com) or Kevin Day (kday@hgsuw.com).  Happy Holidays!
