Message from the Incoming President
It is an honor and a privilege to serve as your president for the coming year. Formalized in 1879, the Peoria County Bar Association began the treasured tradition of service to its members and the community. The committees work tirelessly to continue this tradition in challenging times for the legal profession. The PCBA has excelled in promoting respect and camaraderie among its members in every endeavor undertaken, whether it is one of our social events, a CLE, or our final tribute to our members at the memorial service.
My mission in the coming year is to continue the tradition of service to our members and the community. We will be introducing new CLE programs and formats to give our members more CLE opportunities including more updates. We will provide training to help you and your office embrace electronic filing.  The PCBA is more than an association – it is a family of hard working and yes, fun-loving lawyers.  We will help this family grow more diverse and even more talented with efforts such as the Peoria Legal Academy.
All these goals are prefaced with “we.”  I know from over 38 years as a proud member of this association, the work is done by the determined work of the committees and the dedicated support of the members.  I thank you for the opportunity to work with you in the coming year.

PCBA Members Assisting Service Members
PCBA members continue to volunteer their services to veterans who need legal assistance. This month we would like to thank William Holman who is assisting a military person with a domestic relations matter. Most cases we receive are domestic matters and we’d like to expand our group of attorneys that can volunteer to handle these types of cases. Mike Lied of Howard & Howard heads up this effort. Please contact Mike at mlied@howard andhoward.com or the PCBA office if you know a veteran needing legal assistance or if you would like to be added to our list of volunteers to assist a veteran.

Lawyer-to-Lawyer Mentoring Program
Kerrianne Waters and Jessica Sarff are heading up the 2016-17 program and are currently looking for participants to sign up as either mentors or mentees.  This is a great opportunity to promote professionalism in the PCBA.  The orientation luncheon will be on July 26 from noon to 1:00 at the PCBA office.  Participants receive six hours of professionalism credit during this one-year program.   The deadline for registering for the mentoring program is July 15.  To register visit http://lawyermentor.ilsccp.org/pcba/.

She was admitted to the Illinois and Florida bar, as well as the U.S. Supreme Court. She was also an Air Force Veteran. To make a donation in memory of Rhonda J. Foster online click here

The PCBA has donated $100 to the Foundation in her memory.

Pro Bono Committee
By: Hon. Michael Brandt, Chair
The next meeting of the Pro Bono Committee will be August 25 at Noon. All are welcome as we continue the rich tradition of this committee. One on-going project that the committee will address is expungement and related remedies. Many people in need would be served as they attempt to find employment by expanding the availability of services/knowledge of the law regarding Illinois statutes designed to rehabilitate people involved in past minor offenses. Another area of need is addressing pro bono clients that cannot be served by Prairie State due to a conflict of interest by having lawyers available to accept referrals directly from our Pro Bono Committee. Do you have other suggestions? We would like to hear from you.

Young Lawyers
The young lawyers are taking a break from committee meetings the month of July. They will be back and ready to go on August 11 for the first meeting of the 2016-2017 fiscal year.

Chiefs Game
Join PCBA members on Friday, August 26 at Dozer Park for a fun night of baseball! Our very own Brothers-in-Law (John Bathke, Rob Bennett, Paul Brodersen & Kevin Miller) will be singing the National Anthem at this event. The night will conclude with a fireworks show. To reserve your tickets contact the PCBA office at 674-6049 or pcba@mtco.com. Tickets are $10.

Prairie State 2016 Volunteer Involvement Plan
Prairie State is pleased to announce the release of its 2016 Volunteer Involvement Plan, which is available at http://pslegal.org/psls-pdf/PSLS_PAI_plan_2016.pdf. The Plan describes Prairie State’s current volunteer projects and our goals for the coming year. Here are just a few of our recent pro bono accomplishments:
·         Volunteer attorneys completed nearly 1,500 pro bono cases in 2015. Clients received advice or brief services in approximately 2/3 of these cases and more extensive representation in 1/3 of these cases.
·         Volunteers reported over 13,000 hours of service in 2015.
·         470 volunteer attorneys accepted almost 1,600 new pro bono cases in 2015. Approximately 57% of these cases involved a family law matter, and 15% involved a consumer issue such as bankruptcy or debt collection harassment.
·         More than 20 undergraduate, paralegal, and law students interned with Prairie State in 2015. These students interviewed clients, drafted court pleadings, conducted legal research, reviewed and summarized medical records in Social Security cases, and performed other activities in support of our work.
·         Fourteen retired, inactive, or out-of-state attorneys performed pro bono services through Prairie State under Illinois Supreme Court Rule 756(k) in 2015. This represents almost 30% of the total number of Illinois attorneys who performed pro bono services under Rule 756(k) in 2015.
·         The Peoria office referred 119 cases to pro bono attorneys in 2015
We look forward to building on these successes in 2016 by:
1.       Continuing to prioritize referral of individual clients to volunteer attorneys for extended representation.
2.       Recruiting more retired attorneys to volunteer in our offices.
3.       Developing and offering cost effective “bite-sized” pro bono opportunities.
4.       Using technology to train and support volunteers.
5.       Involving more non-attorney volunteers.
We need your help to make these goals a reality! Many of our most successful pro bono ventures have grown out of conversations with our pro bono partners.  We hope you will take a few minutes to review our 2016 Volunteer Involvement Plan and give us your thoughts. Please feel free to contact me at (309)621-4005 or at kdurham@pslegal.org.
We look forward to continuing to work with the members of the Peoria County Bar Association to ensure equal access to justice.
