Message from the President

Thank you!
On behalf of your Peoria County Bar Association, thanks to all of you who participated in the annual "Strides for Justice." (see below) Whether you walked, ran or just contributed, you helped to provide funds to Prairie State Legal Services so it can offer legal services to those who can least afford them.
I encourage everyone to attend our 12th Annual Diversity Luncheon set for Wednesday, October 21 at the Pere Marquette. We are honored this year to have the new Bradley University athletic director, Chris Reynolds, as our speaker. A Peoria native and basketball star locally and at Indiana University, Chris has brought new energy and excitement back to the Bradley athletic programs.  If you have not done so, please sign up by clicking here.
At the luncheon, our Diversity Committee will announce this year's winners of our Diversity Scholarships. These scholarships are the result of the contributions that many of our members have made through the years to the Peoria County Bar Association Foundation. In order to continue making these awards in the future, your continued support of the Foundation is necessary.  If you have not yet made a pledge to the Peoria County Bar Association Foundation, please do so now by clicking here
I hope to see you at the Diversity Luncheon on October 21st.  Thanks for your continued support of our Bar Association.

Fitness, Health & Wellness
By Mitch Gilfillan
The body works in mysterious ways.  The importance of maintaining a healthy diet, exercising regularly and sleeping in peace should not be underestimated.  In particular, managing a consistent sleeping pattern will work wonders in your day-to-day activities and overall well-being.  Before joining the practice of law, I worked in college athletics where a “good night sleep” was not only encouraged, it was required. Sleep, or lack thereof, has the ability to change your life.  For example, according to the National Institute of Health, efficient sleeping habits will improve your brain memory, increase your attention span, boost your creativity and enable you to make smarter decisions.  That being said, on a daily basis, it is undisputed proper rest will improve your work performance and in the long run, your career.  That’s free advice for all!  The attached article sheds light on the importance of sleep for athletes and even dubs sleep the “magic pill.”  While it is true we chose to go professional in something other than sports, the concepts in the article remain applicable to all career paths. http://espn.go.com/espn/commentary/story/_/id/7765998/for-athletes-sleep-new-magic-pill

Tennis Anyone?
The Fitness,Health & Wellness Committee is taking a survey to see if PCBA members are interested in a tennis tournament.  Email Jim Kane jkane@peorialawyers.com or the bar office pcba@mtco.com to express your interest.

Lawyer Referral Service
In need of new clients? Consider joining the PCBA’s lawyer referral service program for a nominal yearly fee! We receive numerous calls every day from people needing an attorney referral. Any member of the PCBA who is now engaged in the active practice of law, has been so engaged in practice for at least a year, and has a law office located in Peoria or Tazewell County may apply. Attorneys who have signed up to participate in the LRS agree to send 10% of fees over $1,000 back to the PCBA.  This is strictly on the honor system and we appreciate all of our participants who continue to return fees.  If you’d like to learn more about how to participate, contact the PCBA at pcba@mtco.com.

PEORIA COUNTY PRO BONO PLAN

By Sandra Crow and Shirley Coers
We would like to thank the following attorneys, paralegals, and other support staff who have assisted low income persons and recently closed pro bono cases:   Jennifer Bonesteel, Stuart Borden, Spencer Daniels, Julie Galassi, Timothy Howard, Carol Perkins (3 cases) and Mark Rossi.
Urgent Need for Volunteers
1) We have many new attorneys that would like to assist clients with family law cases, but don’t feel like they have the expertise.  Training alone does not always make one confident, so we are looking for attorneys who would be willing to mentor attorneys in doing a family law case.  Please contact me if you are interested.
2) There is a need for attorneys who would be willing to represent clients in Fulton County.  The clients would be able to travel to the Peoria area for an appointment, but the court hearing would be in Fulton County.  If you currently travel to Fulton County, or would be willing to, please contact me as we have many clients in that area that are not being assisted.
October is the month set aside by the American Bar Association to celebrate the great pro bono work that you do and to recognize the need for pro bono.  There will be many events held around the country during this week.  Please feel free to visit the website www.celebrateprobono.org to learn more.

OTHER NEWS
They were so impressive with their rendition of the National Anthem, sung without accompaniment and in a minor key, at the 2015 Lincoln Banquet. Then they rocked the house with the same fantastic rendition of the anthem at this year’s Law Day Luncheon. The “Brothers-in-Law” is the PCBA’s very own men’s acapella group. And now they’re looking to expand their numbers.  If you can sing and would like to be a part of this group, to be featured at various upcoming bar association events, send an email to Kevin Miller at kmiller@quinnjohnston.com.  An organized meeting is being planned.

CASA of Peoria County is pleased to announce that this year’s “CASAblanca, an evening of Dancing with the Local Stars” is scheduled for Saturday, November 7, 2015 at 6:00 p.m. in the Par-A-Dice Hotel Ballroom. Please save the date and plan to attend for a great event and some fun as one of the PCBA’s own Directors, Joshua Herman, and PCBA Member, Beth Jensen, have agreed to be one of our “Local Stars!” For more information, please call the CASA office at (309)669-2939 or visit the website at www.casapeoria.org.
