PEORIA COUNTY PRO BONO PLAN
By Sandra Crow and Shirley Coers
We would like to thank the following attorneys, paralegals, and other support staff who have assisted low income persons and successfully closed pro bono cases:  Kirk Bode (2 cases), Christina Cullom, Brigette Lobacz, Emily Perkins (2 cases), Gerard Rickert, Melissa Schoenbein (2 cases), Luke Taylor, Thomas Trager, Jo Tewes Wetherill and R. Carl Wilbur.

HIGHLIGHT CASE OF THE MONTH:
Affordable and decent housing is one of the biggest challenges faced by low income persons.  A client came to us because she had rented a home on Craig's list. In November 2014 she paid $550 for first month's rent, and $550 for a security deposit. She moved in December 2014. The weather turned very cold and the pipes froze and burst, flooding the basement. She did not have water for many days and the landlord was not fixing the problem. She called Code Enforcement, and the landlord was cited for many violations, including a faulty electrical box. Code Enforcement gave the client a letter stating the property was uninhabitable and telling her she must move. As soon as she found another place she moved. The landlord refused to return her security deposit. The client filed a pro se petition for return of the security deposit  and won, but the landlord hired an attorney to vacate the Judgment.  Not knowing what to do next, she contacted our office.  Christina Cullom, an attorney with Quinn, Johnston, Henderson, Pretorius & Cerulo agreed to represent the client.  The landlord was ordered to pay $550 + 269.50 interest. Even then the landlord refused to pay the full amount, and Attorney Cullom had to return to court, and the Judgment was finally satisfied.  Thank you Christina; the client would have had a very different outcome without your help, as this amount of money makes a big difference in the life of a low income person.

CONGRATULATIONS
The ISBA has established the John C. McAndrews Pro Bono Service Award to honor the extraordinary commitment of individuals, bar associations, or law firm/corporate legal departments for providing free legal services to the income eligible or expanding the availability of legal services to the income eligible in Illinois.  This year the award for the small firm category was presented to Kavanagh, Scully, Sudow, White & Frederick, P.C.  This is an honor well deserved by a firm that has a long history of providing pro bono legal assistance to those less fortunate.  Thank you for your generosity.
