Fitness, Health & Wellness

Two Useful Smartphone Apps for Walkers, Runners and Bicyclists
TrailLink: The basic app, which is free, can be used to find information on walking, running and biking trails.  You can search by location, trail name, or a keyword.  Searches can be filtered by type of activity, trail length, and the type and surface of the trail, and directions to reach the trail.  For many of the trails, the app also has photos of the trail and reviews posted by users of the trail.  For a fee, you can also use the app to purchase trail maps.
Strava:  This free GPS-based app lets you track and keep records of your walks, runs and rides.  You can see, in real time, your distance, elapsed time, and average speed.  After each activity, you can record the details, along with a map showing your route.  The app also provides you with the cumulative stats of your activities for the year to date and “all time.”  If you are into social media, you can also use the app to share the stats from your activities with others.

Lawyer Referral Service
A special thanks go to Angela Evans (at right) for the return of a referral fee of $363 to the Bar Association last month.  Attorneys who have signed up to participate in the LRS agree to send 10% of fees over $1,000 back to the PCBA.  This is strictly on the honor system and we appreciate all of our participants who continue to return those fees.  If you’d like to learn more about how to participate, contact the Association by email, pcba@mtco.com.

Local Continuing Legal Education
In the last half of the alphabet and still need a couple of credit hours to complete your requirements?  Remember the PCBA has DVDs for rent (Brown Bag Seminars) or sale (2014 and 2015 Winter Series).  Contact us at pcba@mtco.com.

The Membership Committee has received applications for membership from Mitch Gilfillan, Quinn Johnston; Ashlee Harmon, Whitney & Potts; and Jessamy Thomison, Prairie State Legal ServicesApplications for student membership have been received from Jeff Cassidy and Sandy Gallant-Jones. Their applications will be submitted for approval at the August Board meeting.

On June 8, 2015, PCBA Member Robert C. Strodel passed away at the age of 84.  He was born in Evanston, Illinois. Bob received his undergrad degree from Northwestern University in 1952 and his J.D. from the University of Michigan Law School in 1955.  He served in the U.S. Army from 1955 to 1957 and served in the Army Reserves.  Bob was a former Assistant State’s Attorney and later in private practice.  He authored and published two books on the acquisition and use of medical evidence.  He was President of the National Civil Justice Foundation, 1998-99.  Bob was a member of numerous professional organizations, including ATLA, and in 1999 brought ATLA President Richard Hailey to speak at the Lincoln Memorial Banquet.

Donations in memory of Robert C. Strodel may be made online.  The PCBA has donated $100 to the PCBA Foundation in memory of Robert C. Strodel.

Real Property
Remember the newly-revised real estate forms may be obtained by contacting the PCBA office by phone or email.  Information on the recent changes at the Peoria County Recorder of Deeds Office may be found on the home page of www.peoriabar.org.  Included in that information are dates for training and how to sign up for it.

Young Lawyers
The Young Lawyers Committee is taking a break for the month of July, but will resume its busy schedule on August 13 with its first meeting of the new fiscal year.  Thanks go to Jeff Bach (at right) for running a tight ship in 2014-15, ending the fiscal year in the black by finding guest speakers and sponsors for the monthly lunch meetings.  Thanks go to Commerce Bank, who provided lunch and meeting space for the June meeting that was attended by many YLC-ers as well as summer interns.

By Sandra Crow and Shirley Coers
We would like to thank the following attorneys, paralegals, and other support staff who have assisted low income persons and recently closed pro bono cases:  Jennifer Bonesteel, Angela Evans (2 cases), Kevin Lowe, Peter Lynch, Timothy McCarthy, Robert Muir, Gerard Rickert (2 cases), and Sadiq Shariff.

A Forum on Pro Bono was held on June 11th at the Caterpillar Visitor Center.  The event was sponsored by Caterpillar Inc., the Peoria County Bar Association, and Prairie State Legal Services. CLE credit was given to all who attended.  There were 80 attorneys from the Tenth Judicial Circuit in attendance. The panel, consisting of Judge Lisa Wilson, Michael Bergmann, Executive Director of the Public Interest Law Initiative, and Marisa Wiesman, Director or Volunteer Services for Prairie State Legal Services, discussed the growing need for pro bono services and how you can help.  After the panel discussion, we held round table discussions of all issues.  We are in the process of compiling all the comments from the round table discussion, and I will report on those findings next month.  But what we did learn:
 - 13% of residents in the 10th Judicial Circuit live below the poverty level
 - there is one lawyer for every 429 persons in Illinois, but only one legal aid lawyer for every 6,415 low income persons
 - only one in six low income persons receive help with a legal problem

The gap can only be closed through the assistance of pro bono attorneys.  We invite you to join our efforts by volunteering.  There are many ways to assist: direct representation, limited scope representation, the Tenth Judicial Circuit family law help desk, giving legal advice by telephone through our Borderless Pro Bono Project, and much more to come as new projects are developed to meet the growing need.  Please feel free to call Sandra Crow at 621-4005 to see how you can help.

Welcome Aboard!

On June 29 Stephanie Bitner began at the PCBA office as receptionist. She has been working in the legal field since March 2012.  She previously worked for Borsberry Law Offices, P.C. and as a legal assistant in the felony division of the Peoria County State’s Attorney’s Office.  She joined our office part time so she could be home with her 3-month old daughter, Rosalie.  When she’s not busy she enjoys hiking and traveling with her husband and spending time in the kitchen baking.

The Central District of Illinois Chapter of the Federal Bar Association is presenting a live seminar/webinar on July 22 at the Federal Courthouse.  Register at www.CentralDistrictIL-CLE.com  Questions?
