Message from the President

Happy Holidays!
On behalf of your Peoria County Bar Association, here is wishing you and your families a joyous Holiday Season and a prosperous New Year.
Our Lincoln Memorial Banquet Committee is hard at work for our annual dinner to be held on February 11. One of the recognitions made at the dinner is the PCBA Distinguished Community Service Award.  Established in 1995, each year one of our members is honored for his or her record of exemplary community volunteerism that serves both the Peoria area and this Association. Past recipients are:
William Rutherford, Rex Linder, Tim Bertschy, David Mueller, Tim Cassidy, Hon. Mary McDade, Donald Jackson, Karl Kuppler, Craig Young, William Connor, Karen Stumpe, Hon. Michael Mihm, Matthew Jones, Hon. John A. Gorman, Jeff Krumpe and Beth Jensen.  If you know someone who is worthy of this honor, please nominate that person. The link for the Nomination Form on our website is:  https://peoriabar.org/form/pcba-2016-distinguished-community-service-award.  Nomination Forms must be returned (to the PCBA Office) or submitted on line NO LATER than January 4, 2016.
Finally, although the end of the year is drawing near, it is not too late to get another tax deduction.  Please consider a gift to Peoria County Bar Association Foundation.  It is easy and your support of the Foundation helps in its mission to award annual scholarships.  If you can make a pledge to the Foundation, please do so now by downloading and returning the form
Thank you for your continued support of our Bar Association.

We would like to thank the following attorneys, paralegals, and other support staff who have assisted low income persons and recently closed pro bono cases: Spencer Daniels, Donald Hartshorn, Jeremy Heiple, Noah Menold, and Gerard Rickert (2 cases).
We are looking for experienced attorneys who would be willing to mentor young lawyers in the Tenth Judicial Circuit.  We have so many new attorneys who are willing to help with directly referred cases, the Tenth Judicial Circuit Help Desk, and the Borderless Pro Bono Project, but they would really like to have someone who can answer questions and help them along the way.  If you are interested in developing new pro bono attorneys, you may contact me or Abigail Fleming at AbigailFleming@mtco.com. Abigail is the Chair of the Young Lawyer Subcommittee of the Tenth Judicial Circuit Committee.  She is working with Judge Lisa Wilson to involve more of our young lawyers.  Your help will be greatly appreciated.
Prairie State Legal Services is very excited to announce the launch of the Borderless Pro Bono Project elearning course!  This free, on-demand, web-based CLE covers parentage; custody/allocation of parental responsibility; visitation/parenting time; child support; working with low income clients; and client communications.  Course registration is available through the Borderless Pro Bono Project webpage, http://borderlessprobono.illinoisprobono.org/.
The learning course was designed for Borderless Pro Bono Project volunteers, but it is open to anyone and a great resource for volunteers new to family law.  The course covers both the current law and the changes that go into effect on January 1.  (Note that the course covers parentage, custody/visitation/allocation of parental responsibility/parenting time, and child support, but does not cover divorce law.)  Participants will receive CLE credit.  (Amount of credit varies depending on the length of time it takes the participant to complete the course.)
On November 19 members of the PCBA volunteered at the Street Law Field trip at the Caterpillar’s Visitors Center. The volunteers helped run the field trip and provided classroom instruction in Contract, Employment, and Criminal Law. The PCBA members who volunteered their time were Arsenio Mims, Bob Jennetten, Megan Dooly, Sonni Williams, Greg Rastatter, and Robert Hills.
