Be Good to Your Brain
We all know that regular aerobic exercise make our bodies leaner, fitter, and healthier, but we don’t necessarily think of exercise as being good for our brains. But it is! Greatly so, according to Dr. David Perlmutter, a neurologist, in his well-researched book with an unappealing title: Grain Brain. In his book, Dr. Perlmutter documents how exercise can increase the growth of new brain cells, protect against the risk of Alzheimer’s disease, and reverse memory decline. According to Dr. Perlmutter, exercise “builds a brain that resists physical shrinkage and enhances cognitive flexibility.” (www.Dr.Perlmutter.com) Who wouldn’t want that? So, the next time you are working out, remember that your brain is getting stronger too!
In addition to exercise, a healthy diet, and sufficient sleep, Dr. Perlmutter endorses meditation as a means of promoting brain health and longevity. If you are, like I was, a skeptic about meditation, a gentle and hilarious entrée into that seemingly ethereal realm can be made via Dan Harris’ book, 10% Happier. An anchor of Good Morning America Weekend and co-anchor of Nightline, Dan sought a calming way of dealing with the competitive high pressure of the TV news world. He is a very funny writer and managed, with his wit and good humor, to lead me into giving meditation a try. I like it. You might too. And your brain will thank you.
Now is the time to start preparing for the 2014 Strides for Justice 5K, on September 27! Questions? Contact Ron Hanna, email@example.com.
Government & Public Interest Law Committee
Nominations Sought for Public Servant Award
Do you know an outstanding leader with a history of service in the public sector? The Government and Public Interest Committee will be recognizing an attorney from the public sector at the Annual Meeting on July 7, 2014. The Committee is seeking nominations for the Public Servant Award. The Public Servant Award recognizes the positive impact made by our community's government and public interest lawyers. The Public Servant Award will be presented to an extraordinary individual for outstanding service to the public. By celebrating the contributions and career of a single lawyer, we also recognize the power of the law in serving the public interest and honor the fundamental values of our legal profession and justice system. The award honors a licensed Illinois attorney who has provided at least ten years of legal service to an entity that is funded by tax dollars or is otherwise considered a government, academic, or non-profit legal service organization. The honoree must be a PCBA member who is an outstanding leader in his or her field and follows the highest ethical standards. The nomination form is attached hereto. You may also go to our website and complete the Nomination Form online at https://peoriabar.org/form/pcba-public-servant-award. Completed nomination forms must be submitted by June 15, 2014 to the PCBA.

Re: Peoria County Public Defender appointment
Upon expiration of the appointment of the present Public Defender at the close of business on April 30, 2014, the temporary appointment of Peoria attorney Jeffrey L. Flanagan as Peoria County Public Defender shall take effect until further order of the judiciary.
We would like to thank following attorneys and their staff who have recently closed pro bono cases: Angela Evans, Michael Fleming, Robert Jennetten, Casey Kepple, Kevin Lowe, Robert Muir, Jeff Ryva, Steven Wakeman, and Emily Wilburn.
A SPECIAL THANK YOU
Special thanks to everyone who attended our Campaign for Legal Services and Pro Bono Recognition Luncheon. It is really hard to express how grateful we are to the attorneys who provide pro bono services to our clients. We are so fortunate in our area to have attorneys who always say “yes,” and always represent our clients fully and thoughtfully. And as I stated at the luncheon, the paralegals, legal assistants, and other support staff also deserve our gratitude. They are often times the forgotten heroes. I know they are frequently the ones who answer the phone calls, deal with frustrated clients, and soothe agitations. And in many cases, it is those supporting persons who urge their employers to be involved in pro bono. You make my job easy.
Linda Raineri, Executive Director of the Peoria County Bar Association, was presented with our Joined In Justice Award. She is the behind the scenes pro bono coordinator and a special friend to Prairie State. Thank you, Linda.
