President’s Message

President Jim Kane would like to thank the officers, board members and committee members for their service during the past year and in the year ahead. “I am honored to have been chosen to serve as PCBA President. I pledge to do my best to follow the excellent example which was set by my predecessor, Hon. Lisa Y. Wilson.  Two areas to which I would like to give particular attention during my term are as follows:  1)  Increase active participation in the PCBA by more of our members. This would include service on committees and attendance at PCBA events, such as the Lincoln Banquet & Gala and the Law Day Luncheon.  2)  Serve and actively involve “more experienced” PCBA members. Currently there are 209 PCBA members who are age 60 and above, and 72 PCBA members who are age 70 and above. I would like to work to find ways to serve the needs and interests of those members, such as assisting with the transition to e-filing. I am asking PCBA committees for their suggestions in this regard. I am encouraging those members to be active in the PCBA and the Peoria legal community by actively serving on PCBA committees and volunteer activities, such as Prairie State.  My overall goal is that the PCBA continue to be a valuable resource to our members and a positive influence both in the legal profession and in our entire community.”

10th Annual Diversity Luncheon

The Annual Diversity Luncheon will be held on Wednesday, October 23, 2013 from 12:00 – 1:00 p.m., at the Peoria Marriott Père Marquette. This year’s featured speaker will be Monica Torres-Linares, Founding Member of Legal Prep. Tickets are $35.00 per person or $350.00 per table of ten. Deadline to reserve your seat is October 16, 2013. Remember, proceeds for this event help fund the Diversity Scholarship and this year’s scholarship recipient will be announced at the luncheon. You may complete the Registration Form included with this issue and return it to the PCBA,  office along with your payment, or you may register online www.peoriabar.org/Shop/CLE. If you are registering for a table of ten online, please be sure that you list attorneys attending and their menu choice in the “Order Comment Section” when checking out. If you have questions, please contact the PCBA Office (309) 674-6049.

Illinois Joining Forces

The PCBA will be working with Illinois Joining Forces (IJF) to better serve local military personnel and veterans.  IJF is a statewide network of public and private organizations which serve military personnel and veterans.  The PCBA has joined IJF to give back to those who have selflessly sacrificed so much.  Through IJF, the PCBA will help veterans and military personnel find the legal assistance they need.  The PCBA will also host various programs to educate local attorneys in areas of the law most pertinent to veterans and other military personnel, in an effort to increase the number of attorneys able to provide necessary services.  Many local attorneys have been providing services to local military personnel and veterans through efforts largely coordinated by local attorney Michael Lied of Howard and Howard Attorneys PLLC.  The PCBA hopes that by joining IJF, it can institutionalize Mr. Lied’s efforts to find and match service members to an attorney who can assist them, while empowering a greater number of service members with legal access and knowledge.  Further information may be found at www.illinoisjoiningforces.org.

PRO BONO NEWS
Changes are coming to Prairie State Legal Services and our pro bono projects.  Marisa Wiesman, former Managing Attorney of our Kankakee office, has become our new Volunteer Lawyer Project Director.  In her new position, she will be working closely with our PAI coordinators.  This is an exciting development as our Pro Bono Projects are quite varied from office to office, and she will help to bring ideas from one program to another so we may all benefit.  She will be attending a Pro Bono Committee meeting and other functions in Peoria in the coming months.
Our Expungment/Sealing project is in much greater demand than we ever anticipated.  The cases we accept are carefully selected, but even so the numbers are great.  This project is important because it allows people to find gainful employment and be self-sufficient. If you would like to help with this project please contact me or David House at dmhouse@fastmail.fm.  Training is available.

Access to Justice… After Hours 2013 will be held on Thursday, October 17, 2013, from 6:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. at Weaver Ridge Golf Club.  This is a fundraiser to benefit Prairie State Legal Services, Inc.  The event will feature a live and silent auction, live music, appetizers, and a cash bar.  Auction items include a one week time share to Kauai in the Hawaiian Islands, University of Illinois football tickets, a wine tasting package, and a fishing trip package.  Tickets are available online at www.pslegal.org or by contacting Prairie State’s office at 674-9831.  Ticket price is $30 per ticket, although a $10 discount will be given to all ticket purchasers age 36 and under.  All proceeds from the event will support Prairie State’s programs in Peoria and the surrounding communities.
Prairie State Legal Services is your local legal aid provider.  Prairie State is a not-for-profit law firm that provides free legal representation and advice to individuals with serious civil legal problems that affect their basic human needs, including housing, medical care, and personal safety.  Prairie State provides legal services to the most vulnerable individuals in our society, including the poor, the elderly, and people with disabilities.  Prairie State never charges its clients attorneys’ fees.  Rather, Prairie State receives its funding through grants and donations.  Prairie State is a United Way partner agency, and on July 31, 2012, was named Partner of the Year by the local Heart of Illinois United Way.  Please join us on October 17 to support the work of Prairie State.  If you have any questions, or would like to donate an item to the auction, please contact Managing Attorney Denise Conklin at 309/621-4011 or dconklin@pslegal.org.
