Illinois Joining Forces

Many local attorneys have been providing services to local military personnel and veterans through efforts largely coordinated by local attorney Michael Lied of Howard and Howard Attorneys PLLC.  The PCBA hopes that by joining IJF, it can institutionalize Mr. Lied’s efforts to find and match service members to an attorney who can assist them, while empowering a greater number of service members with legal access and knowledge.

Fitness, Health & Wellness Committee - Member Link to Wellness

By Ronald L. Hanna, Chair, FHW Committee

CAFFEINE: Are Monster caffeine levels akin to a Jekyll-and-Hyde personality in the stress of the courtroom and the office? Most attorneys I know drink lots of coffee. Learn how much is too much by clicking http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/caffeine/NU00600.

Strides for Justice 5k:
We are currently in the early stages of setting a date for the Annual PCBA Strides for Justice. In years past we locked in the third Saturday in May, however we are finding a “crowded” field of races on that day. Please mark your calendars for the Fall of 2014 for the 7th Annual Strides for Justice and visit the website http://www.stridesforjustice.com for further information regarding this event.

FHW Member Tip:
Recently a judge sentenced my client to probation and gave him sage advice: “80% of success is showing up. Just show up for your monthly probation meetings and you will be fine. It’s not hard.” The same applies to a commitment to exercise. Don’t concentrate on a long term goal yet. Set a simple goal to show up on a specific number of days per week, no matter how you feel, and get started. You will be surprised how many times you will get a great work out in on a day that you didn’t feel you had it in you.

If you would like to join this vibrant committee, please contact Linda, pcba@mtco.com.

The ABA Standing Committee on Pro Bono and Public Service has designated the week of October 20-26 as National Celebrate Pro Bono Week.  This week has been set aside to honor those attorneys who feel it is their responsibility to guarantee that equal justice for all, as provided in our Constitution, still has meaning.   The need for pro bono services is becoming ever more important during these harsh economic times.  The Illinois Supreme Court Access to Justice Commission is calling for more pro bono efforts to meet this growing need, and there has been an unprecedented response by attorneys to meet this demand across the county.  We are very proud of the attorneys in the Ninth and Tenth Judicial Circuit that have given so generously to this effort, and we thank you for your generous contributions. During this week we will be putting effort into educating and informing the community about the important work that pro bono attorneys do every day to help those less fortunate.

Access to Justice… After Hours 2013 will be held on Thursday, October 17, 2013, from 6:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. at Weaver Ridge Golf Club.  This is a fundraiser to benefit Prairie State Legal Services, Inc.  The event will feature a live and silent auction, live music, appetizers, and a cash bar.  Auction items include a one week time share to Kauai in the Hawaiian Islands, University of Illinois football tickets, a wine tasting package, and a fishing trip package.  Tickets are available online at www.pslegal.org or by contacting Prairie State’s office at 674-9831.  Ticket price is $30 per ticket, although a $10 discount will be given to all ticket purchasers age 36 and under.  All proceeds from the event will support Prairie State’s programs in Peoria and the surrounding communities. Please join us on October 17 to support the work of Prairie State.  If you have any questions, or would like to donate an item to the auction, please contact Managing Attorney Denise Conklin at 309/621-4011 or dconklin@pslegal.org.

Peoria County Veterans Memorial

The Peoria County Board has established a committee for the purpose of planning and raising funds for the construction of a final Veterans Memorial on the Courthouse Plaza. The Committee’s intent is to construct a fitting memorial in honor of Peoria County’s Veterans of Korea to the present, as well as any possible future conflicts. This memorial will honor Peoria County Veterans who have served in the  U. S. Military during the Korean War, Vietnam War, Grenada, Panama, Persian Gulf, Somalia, Haiti, Bosnia, Kosovo, Iraq, Afghanistan and the War on Terrorism. In addition, this memorial will honor the 106 Peoria County Veterans who lost their lives in Korea and Vietnam by listing their names on the memorial panels. This project cannot be completed without the support of Peoria area businesses, local governments and citizens. The goal is to raise $500,000 which will enable completion next year. All contributions will be for restrictive purposes of the costs related to planning, designing, constructing, dedicating and maintaining a final Veterans Memorial on the Peoria County Courthouse Grounds. The support of the Peoria Area Business Community during Peoria County’s efforts in establishing the Memorials of World War I & II veterans was greatly appreciated and we trust that PCBA members will assist in completing the tasks to honor all Peoria County Veterans.
