Law Day Luncheon
This year's luncheon is Friday, May 10, 2013, from 12:00 - 1:00 p.m. at Four Points by Sheraton.  The Law Day theme is "Realizing the Dream:  Equality for All" and keynote speaker will be Sheryl J. Strides for Justice 2013
The 2013 Strides for Justice will be held on Saturday, May 18, 2013.  Check-in and race day registration will begin at 7:00 a.m. at Tower Park in Peoria Heights.  The race begins at 8:00 a.m. near Tower Park and runs along beautiful Grandview Drive.  You can register online at http://www.stridesforjustice.com.  Strides for Justice will be a Grand Prix race for the Illinois Valley Striders.
New for 2013:  The run will be bib/chip timed by RC Race Management and times will be posted on the race website!  The fastest male and female runner will each win a $100 gift certificate from Running Central.  Plus, any runner finishing ahead of Running Justice will be entered to win one of three $100 gift certificates from Running Central!  Again this year the awards ceremony and after race party will be held at Oliver's Pizza and Pub in Peoria Heights.  We are looking forward to seeing you on May 18th!  Don't forget to invite your family and friends.

Federal Court Hosts Reception for Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor
The Federal Courthouse was an ideal seetting for a reception held on April 10, 2013, for Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor (Ret).  Pictured at left with Justice O'Connor is James E. Shadid, Chief Judge of the United States District Court, Central District of Illinois, who organized the reception.  Justice O'Connor was a delightful speaker, sprinkling her comments with wisdom and humor.  Her remarks directed to students were, "Learn how to read fast and write well."  Her anecdotes of her first days on the Supreme Court brought waves of laughter from attorneys, community members and Bradley pre-law students who attended the extraordinary event.  Eureka College, the PCBA and Bradley University assisted with the reception.  Contact the PCBA If you would like to view the DVD of the event.

Entertainment Commmittee
Jeffrey Bach has announced that this year's Golf Outing will be Monday, August 19, at Coyote Creek Golf Club.  The rain date is Monday, August 26.
Mark Flannery has announced that the 2013 Holiday Party will be Thursday, December 5, at the new Peoria Marriott Pere Marquette.  Please mark your calendars for both of these events.

Government and Public Interest Law
Do you know an outstanding leader with a history of service in the public sector?  The Government and Public Interest Committee will be recognizing an attorney from the public sector at the Annual Meeting on July 8, 2013.  Click on form to submit a nomination.  Nominations must be submitted by June 15, 2013.

The annual Memorial Service is scheduled for Thursday, May 23, 2013, at 10:30 a.m. in the County Board Room, 4th Floor of the Peoria County Courthouse. Family of the deceased will be attending. This is a heartwarming service where members can offer personal memories of fellow attorneys. Those being honored at this year's service are: Donovan Gaede (Presenter, Patrick O’Shaughnessy), Robert Neff (Presenter, Ralph Fishman), Joseph Sudow (Presenter, Hon. Pro Bono Plan Statistics
The end of the year statistics for the Peoria County Pro Bono Plan are complete, and it has been an outstanding year. The time period used to calculate hours is April 1 through March 31, allowing us to have current statistics for the Pro Bono awards given at the Law Day Luncheon. The statistics for this year are as follows:
*2,623 hours of pro bono time for the year – another record year
*162 new cases referred during reporting period
*57 clients were assisted through clinics
*156 cases were closed
*109 attorneys participating
*63 of cases referred were family law which continues to be a large area of need for our clients

Prairie State Legal Services Annual Pro Bono Recognition and Campaign Kick-Off Lunch
The annual Recognition and Campaign Kick-Off Lunch was held on Monday, April 15, 2013. The Keynote Speaker was Illinois State Senator, Darin LaHood, pictured here with Kimberly A. Sarff (Husch Blackwell, LLP) at left and Shari Berry (Heyl, Royster) at right.  The Pro Bono Volunteers of the year for 2012 also spoke at this event.  They were Jeremy Heiple (Pro-Bono Attorney), Brad Keller (Young Lawyer) and John Pusey on behalf of Vonachen, Lawless,Trager & Slevin (Firm).

Bloomington Attorney, Author to Tell How Local Lawyers Built Lincoln’s Political Base
On May 15th, 2013, Guy C. Fraker, author of “Lincoln’s Ladder” will discuss how Lincoln’s twenty-three years traveling the Eighth Judicial Circuit in Central Illinois, including his Peoria ties, built the political base for his climb to the presidency. Fraker, a Bloomington Attorney and Lincoln scholar, has fully explored the circuit’s historic route and the lawyers and Judge David Davis who traveled together with Lincoln. Sponsored by the Friends of Cullom-Davis Library, Fraker’s talk will begin at 7:00 p.m. in the library’s first-floor Wyckoff Room on the Bradley University campus.
