In Memoriam

Kenneth L. Ott passed away on October 29, 2012.  He was born Novemer 17, 1924, in Hillsboro, Illinois.  He graduated from Hillsboro High School in May, 1942, and enlisted in the U.S. Army in November, 1942, when he turned 18.  After completing basic training, he transferred to the U.S. Air Force in September, 1943, and completed Piper Cub training as an Aviation Cadet.  In March, 1944, all former Army AF Cadets were transferred back to the Army due to increased action on the Western Front in France.  He was assigned to the 272nd Infantry Regiment of the 69th Division, and left for England in November, 1944.  Two weeks later his division joined the front lines helping stem the enemy surge in the Ardennes Forrest.  He was awarded 3 battle stars and his regiment was awarded a Presidential Unit Citation when the war ended.  Ken returned home in the fall of 1945, attended Washington University in  St. Louis, Missouri, transferring to St. Louis University after two years to obtain his law degree in 1951.  After law school, he spent three months as an agent-in-training at the FBI under J. Edgar Hoover before returning to practice law in Missouri.  In 1962, he obtained his license to practice law in Illinois and joined his brother Jack Ott's law firm (Knobloch and Ott) in Peoria in 1963.  Ken practiced law with his brother until January, 1971, when Jack died of lung cancer.  Ken had his own law office as a sole practitioner until December, 2011.  In that 40 year period he also associated for a time with his nephew, Attorney James R. Carter of Peoria.  He had a general law practice including work in corporate law, probate, estate planning, marital matters, litigation, criminal matters, personal injury and workers' compensation.  Ken's daughter, Sally, received on his behalf, his 50-year plaque at the Law Day Luncheon earlier this year.  She told us her father had always been very proud of his profession and being a member of the PCBA.
The PCBA has contributed $100 to the Foundation in memory of Kenneth L. Ott.

Peoria County Pro Bono Plan
By Sandra Crow, Pro Bono Coordinator, scrow@pslegal.org
The following attorneys and their staff have recently closed pro bono cases during the month:  Robert Muir and Patrick Poston.  Thank you for your generosity.

THANK YOU EVERYONE
We would like to thank the judges, attorneys and courthouse staff that visited our table for coffee and treats in the Peoria and Tazewell County courthouses for the ABA Celebrate Pro Bono Week.  There is no adequate way to express our appreciation for the support of our local Judges, the good work done by all the pro bono attorneys, the courthouse staff that assist us in holding divorce clinics and for the support of the Prairie State office in attending fundraisers and sitting on our committees and our board.  Our clients are truly blessed to have such a proactive legal community.  We must also thank Caterpillar Inc. who has become such a vital component in the delivery of legal services in our community.  Your assistance is so important, we cannot do it alone.  Please be sure to support our sponsors, HY-VEE FOODS, ADAMS STREET CAFÉ and CJ’S CAFÉ, who provided the coffee, lemonade, donuts and cookies at no cost.

Access to Justice . . . After Hours 2012
Denise Conklin, Managing Attorney, dconklin@pslegal.org
Prairie State Legal Services’ annual fundraiser was a huge success!  The event took place at Weaver Ridge Golf Club on Friday, October 19.  Thank you to Prairie State’s Campaign Committee for planning and executing this event.  Thank you to Weaver Ridge for hosting the event!  Thank you to Peoria County Sheriff Mike McCoy for serving as the live-auctioneer.  Thank you to John Cheek and Derel Monteith for coordinating and providing the live music.  Thank you to the Peoria County Bar Association for providing the auction booklets.  And thank you to all who donated items to the auction, purchased items from the auction, purchased tickets to the event, and/or attended the event.  The community support for Prairie State was overwhelming!  We are still in the process of calculating the financial benefit from the event, and this information will be published in the December LegalEase.  Thank you for your continued support of Prairie State Legal Services and the clients we serve.

Courtroom Changes effective January 1, 2013
Effective January 1, 2013 all civil first appearances SC, LM, etc. now set in courtroom 210 will be moved to courtrooms 213 or 214 based on how they are numbered. Odd numbered cases are typically set in the odd numbered courtroom, 213 and even numbered cases are typically set in the even numbered courtroom, 214. The only EXCEPTION to this is block time. Attorney block time will remain in courtroom 210, as block time continues to be no court time. The judges presiding in courtrooms 213 and 214 may adjust the days and times for first appearances to be heard.
Change in Criminal Mental Health
Criminal mental health court will remain as scheduled in courtroom 210 but the judge assigned to courtroom 210 will preside rather than the chief judge.
Change of Day
Methodist Medical Center civil court will move from Wednesday morning to Tuesday morning and the judge in courtroom 210 will still preside. The courts are discussing a civil mental health at Proctor Hospital so Judge Brandt will keep attorneys informed once some information is available as to frequency, times, etc.
